On October 20, Vietnam celebrates Vietnamese Women's Day

Flowers, gifts, congratulations, and festive events — on October 20, women are traditionally honored in Vietnam. On this day, special attention is paid to their achievements and contributions to the development of the country’s society, economy, culture, and family traditions.

The history of the holiday is connected with the founding of the Vietnam Women’s Union on October 20, 1930. The organization was created to protect women’s rights and interests, expand their participation in public life, and promote equality. In 2026, it marks the 96th anniversary of its founding.

Today, Vietnamese Women’s Day (Ngày Phụ nữ Việt Nam) is widely celebrated throughout the country. Concerts, exhibitions, cultural programs, public campaigns, and events dedicated to women’s achievements are held for this date. Special attention is also given to women’s entrepreneurship, professional development, and expanding economic opportunities.

The holiday has long become part of everyday life in Vietnam. In companies, it is customary to congratulate female employees and give them flowers and small gifts. Schools and universities organize themed events, while families congratulate mothers, wives, sisters, and other close women.

Foreigners who live or work in Vietnam should also pay attention to this date. If among your colleagues, friends, or acquaintances there are Vietnamese women, a small bouquet, a symbolic gift, or simply warm words will be a pleasant sign of attention. In Vietnam, there is no ban on an even number of flowers in a bouquet, so you can confidently choose an arrangement without the restrictions customary in some other countries. You can also offer congratulations in Vietnamese: “Chúc mừng Ngày Phụ nữ Việt Nam!” — “Happy Vietnamese Women’s Day!”

Interestingly, Vietnam celebrates two women’s holidays: International Women’s Day on March 8 and the national Vietnamese Women’s Day on October 20. The latter has its own history connected with the development of the women’s movement in the country.

Important: October 20 is not an official public holiday. Companies, institutions, shops, and other organizations continue to operate as usual.
